A Beginner’s Guide to Petty Cash: Managing and Recording It

At the end of the period or year, the petty cash balance will be present on the company’s balance sheet with cash on hand and cash in the bank. It is not present in the company income statement, and it is not considered an expense. The most common way of accounting for petty cash expenditures is to use the imprest system.[2] The initial fund would be created by issuing a cheque for the desired amount. An amount of $100 would typically be sufficient for most small business needs as the expenses to be covered are for small amounts. The bookkeeping entry for this initial fund would be to credit Petty Cash and debit bank account.

If you’re ready to set up a petty cash fund for your office but aren’t sure where to begin, follow the simple steps below to have your petty cash fund operational in no time. To begin, have a secure place to store your petty cash funds, such as a lockbox or locked drawer. Most small businesses keep between $100 and $200 in petty cash to pay for these and other unexpected expenses. If you’re ready to set up a petty cash account for your business, we’ll guide you through the process. Most enterprises handle their business expenses through petty cash funds.

Which of these is most important for your financial advisor to have?

In the petty cash policy document, we should state that the petty cash fund is $500 with Heather Smith as the custodian. She should also sign the document to transfer the petty cash fund accountability to her. The reconciliation is straightforward—every time you take cash out of the box, you replace the cash with a receipt for the same amount.

  • After recording the journal entry, the custodian should receive $300 cash or check from the owner or cashier.
  • These expenses have no material effect and generally do not require a high level of authentication for their payment.
  • However, the petty cash custodian may perform weekly or daily reconciliation to keep track of the fund balance.
  • Since the amount involved is usually small, petty cash can be used immediately by employees who are previously authorised.

The person using petty cash does not have to initiate a purchase order for which multiple approvals are required. Since the amount involved is usually small, petty cash can be used immediately by employees who are previously authorised. Petty cash accounts are managed through a series of journal entries. Entries are needed to (1) establish the fund, (2) increase or decrease the balance of the fund (replenish the fund as cash is used), and (3) adjust for overages and shortages of cash. At the time the entry is made, the custodian will receive a $315 check that’s cashed and the money placed in the lockbox.

Creating a Petty Cash Fund

The company can keep a limit on the value of transactions so that the expenses are capped. A business debit card ensures that the money is held in an account where the money continues to earn interest. The transactions made using a business debit card must continue to be monitored along with the supporting documents. Any inconsistencies observed are highlighted by the monitoring officer.

QuickBooks

When there is a shortage of cash, we record the shortage as a “debit” and this has the same effect as an expense. If we have an overage of cash, we record the overage as a credit, and this has the same impact as if we are recording revenue. If there were cash overage, the petty cash account would be debited and the cash over and short account would be credited.

This cheque would then be cashed to acquire the actual cash needed for payments. The Cash Over and Short account will be used to balance the entry when the cash needed to get back to the petty cash account does not match the total of petty cash vouchers. Remember, for all journal entries, total debits must equal total credits.

Definition of Petty Cash

Petty cash is a small amount of money (typically, no more than $500) that a company’s employees can use to cover minor expenses, such as, for example, the costs of milk for coffee or birthday cards. The petty cash fund should be replenished when the cash balance becomes low, or at a recurring period such as the end of the month. It is replenished up to the fixed amount that was originally designated for the petty cash fund. Reconciliation of the petty cash fund should be done periodically to ensure that the fund’s balance is correct. The fund can be replenished back to the approved amount as required.

Main Purposes of Financial Statements (Explained)

Thus, using a petty cash fund avoids the need for making many entries for small amounts. Only when the fund is reimbursed, or when the end of the accounting period arrives, does the firm make an entry in the journal. For small businesses, petty cash expenses and receipts are recorded in the petty cash book.¹ This how to record a prepaid expense is generally a manual process, and the receipts for these entries are also kept in physical form. As cash is spent from a petty cash fund, it is replaced with a receipt of the purchase. At all times, the balance in the petty cash box should be equal to the cash in the box plus the receipts showing purchases.

While a petty cash fund may not be necessary if you work solo, if you have even one employee, it may be worth it to set up a petty cash fund to manage those unexpected expenses properly. To record the petty cash transactions for August, you would need to record the expenses as a journal entry. Since purchases using the petty cash fund are small, it’s typical to see purchase limits of $50 or less with a total account balance of a few hundred dollars. For example, say your small business provides specific services for local business owners.

Balancing the petty cash account usually occurs when the fund needs to be replenished. The petty cash custodian brings all the slips or vouchers to the business’ bookkeeper, cashier, or accountant. The petty cash receipts are logged into the company’s General Ledger as credits to the petty cash account, and probably debits to several different expense accounts. When the petty fund is replenished, usually by drawing on a company-issued check, it’s recorded as a debit to the petty cash account and a credit to the cash account.

However, the availability of petty cash doesn’t mean that it can be accessed for any purpose by any person. Often, a few individuals are authorized to approve disbursements and can only do so for expenses related to legitimate company activities or operations. The petty cash transaction is then recorded on financial statements. The expenditures or purchases made using this cash are not part of the journal entries. Next, the amount is withdrawn from the bank to settle cash expenses. Finally, the amount withdrawn – paper money or coins – is deposited with the custodian.

Two-Way ANOVA Examples & When To Use It

For large datasets, it is best to run an ANOVA in statistical software such as R or Stata. An example of a one-way ANOVA includes testing a therapeutic intervention (CBT, medication, placebo) on the incidence of depression in a clinical sample. To do so, you get a ratio of the between-group variance of final scores and the within-group variance of final scores – this is the F-statistic. With a large F-statistic, you find the corresponding p-value, and conclude that the groups are significantly different from each other. Divide the sum of the squares by n – 1 (for a sample) or N (for a population). When you have collected data from every member of the population that you’re interested in, you can get an exact value for population variance.

  1. It also covers some other statistical issues, but the initial part of the video will be useful to you.
  2. The Tukey test runs pairwise comparisons among each of the groups, and uses a conservative error estimate to find the groups which are statistically different from one another.
  3. A statistically significant effect in ANOVA is often followed by additional tests.
  4. Because our crop treatments were randomized within blocks, we add this variable as a blocking factor in the third model.

This is the maximum probability of Type I error that can reject the null hypothesis of “differences in means do not exist” in the comparison between two mutually independent groups obtained from one experiment. When the null hypothesis is true, the probability of accepting it becomes 1-α. The model summary first lists the independent variables being tested (‘fertilizer’ and ‘density’). Next is the residual variance (‘Residuals’), which is the variation in the dependent variable that isn’t explained by the independent variables. Your independent variables should not be dependent on one another (i.e. one should not cause the other).

In two-way ANOVA, we also calculate SSinteraction and dfinteraction, which defines the combined effect of the two factors. The music experiment actually helped in improving the results of the students. Therefore, there is only one critical region in the right tail (shown as the blue-shaded region above).

It may seem odd that the technique is called “Analysis of Variance” rather than “Analysis of Means.” As you will see, the name is appropriate because inferences about means are made by analyzing variance. You use the chi-square test instead of ANOVA when dealing with categorical data to test associations or independence between two categorical variables. In contrast, ANOVA is used for continuous data to compare the means of three or more groups. Replication requires a study to be repeated with different subjects and experimenters. This would enable a statistical analyzer to confirm a prior study by testing the same hypothesis with a new sample. The main idea behind an ANOVA is to compare the variances between groups and variances within groups to see whether the results are best explained by the group differences or by individual differences.

The type of data

They use the variances of the samples to assess whether the populations they come from significantly differ from each other. Statistical tests like variance tests or the analysis of variance (ANOVA) use sample variance to assess group differences. They use the variances of the samples to assess whether the populations they come from differ from each other. This first model analysis of variance in research does not predict any interaction between the independent variables, so we put them together with a ‘+’. Caution is advised when encountering interactions; Test interaction terms first and expand the analysis beyond ANOVA if interactions are found. Texts vary in their recommendations regarding the continuation of the ANOVA procedure after encountering an interaction.

Calculation B/W Group Variability

For a full walkthrough of this ANOVA example, see our guide to performing ANOVA in R. As mentioned above, materials, labor, and variable overhead consist of price and quantity/efficiency variances. Fixed overhead, however, includes a volume variance and a budget variance. Management should only pay attention to those that are unusual or particularly significant. Often, by analyzing these variances, companies are able to use the information to identify a problem so that it can be fixed or simply to improve overall company performance.

ANOVA literally means analysis of variance, and the present article aims to use a conceptual illustration to explain how the difference in means can be explained by comparing the variances rather by the means themselves. You should have enough observations in your data set to be able to find the mean of the quantitative dependent variable at each combination of levels of the independent variables. You can use a two-way ANOVA when you have collected data on a quantitative dependent variable at multiple levels of two categorical independent variables. Analysis of variance is employed if there is no access to statistical software resulting in computing ANOVA by hand. With many experimental designs, the sample sizes have to be the same for the various factor level combinations. There are commonly two types of ANOVA tests for univariate analysis – One-Way ANOVA and Two-Way ANOVA.

When standards are compared to actual performance numbers, the difference is what we call a “variance.” Variances are computed for both the price and quantity of materials, labor, and variable overhead and are reported to management. Variance analysis can be summarized as an analysis of the difference between planned and actual numbers. The sum of all variances gives a picture of the overall over-performance or under-performance for a particular reporting period.

F-Statistic for Each Hypothesis

The second is a low fat diet and the third is a low carbohydrate diet. For comparison purposes, a fourth group is considered as a control group. Participants in the fourth group are told that they are participating in a study of healthy behaviors with weight loss only one component of interest. The control group is included here to assess the placebo https://1investing.in/ effect (i.e., weight loss due to simply participating in the study). A total of twenty patients agree to participate in the study and are randomly assigned to one of the four diet groups. Weights are measured at baseline and patients are counseled on the proper implementation of the assigned diet (with the exception of the control group).

Adding these two variables together, we get an overall variance of $3,000 (unfavorable). Although price variance is favorable, management may want to consider why the company needs more materials than the standard of 18,000 pieces. It may be due to the company acquiring defective materials or having problems/malfunctions with machinery. This is necessary to adjust the F-value for the number of groups and the number of observations. It helps to take into account the sample size and the number of groups in the analysis, which influences the reliability and accuracy of the F-value.

Steps for calculating the variance by hand

Considering all this, it would be immensely helpful to have some proof that it actually works. ANOVA compares the variation between group means to the variation within the groups. If the variation between group means is significantly larger than the variation within groups, it suggests a significant difference between the means of the groups. Treatment A appears to be the most efficacious treatment for both men and women. The mean times to relief are lower in Treatment A for both men and women and highest in Treatment C for both men and women. Across all treatments, women report longer times to pain relief (See below).

By identifying which variables have the most significant impact on a particular outcome, businesses can better allocate resources to those areas. Also known as homoscedasticity, this means that the variances between each group are the same. The F-statistic is used to test whether the variability between the groups is significantly greater than the variability within the groups.

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) Explanation, Formula, and Applications

A two-way ANOVA without interaction (a.k.a. an additive two-way ANOVA) only tests the first two of these hypotheses. In the design of an experiment, the number of experimental units is planned to satisfy the goals of the experiment. If any of the group means is significantly different from the overall mean, then the null hypothesis is rejected. A researcher might, for example, test students from multiple colleges to see if students from one of the colleges consistently outperform students from the other colleges. In a business application, an R&D researcher might test two different processes of creating a product to see if one process is better than the other in terms of cost efficiency. In cost accounting, a standard is a benchmark or a “norm” used in measuring performance.

It refers to variations caused by differences within individual groups (or levels), as not all the values within each group are the same. Each sample is looked at on its own, and variability between the individual points in the sample is calculated. In other words, a deviation is given greater weight if it’s from a larger sample.

The Yen Exchange Rate and the Hollowing Out of the Japanese Industry Open Economies Review

Still, we should also mention that our ARDL and panel estimations did not uncover significant exchange rate effects for several industrial sectors, including general machinery, one of the most important industrial sectors for Japan. Having investigated the long-term impact of real effective exchange movements on aggregate manufacturing employment with annual data spanning almost five decades, we now turn to an analysis using higher frequency and, importantly, sector specific data. If exchange rate changes are to have a long-term impact on manufacturing, there ought to be some short-term impacts too. Using sector-specific data at higher frequency allows us to uncover such potential effects.

Again, the tabulated results of the fixed effects redundancy test (in the upper part of Table 13) empirically corroborate our specific choice of fixed effects. In all three estimation variants applied here we allow not only for fixed effects in the constant but also for cross-section specific slope coefficients. The selection of the final model was conducted according to the same criteria applied throughout the article and described in detail beforehand.

We will explicitly check for stochastic trends before we start our estimation exercise in order to make sure that the stochastic properties of the included variables meet the standard assumptions of our regression analysis. Whether this means “causation” in an econometric sense will be checked later on in this section. As a robustness check, we also conducted Dickey-Fuller GLS tests, Phillips-Perron tests, Kwiatkowski-Phillips-Schmidt-Shin (KPSS) and Ng-Perron unit root tests not only for the yen exchange rate but also for all other variables. Among others, they support treating EXPCHIN finally as an I(1) variable in our regressions. The currency often appreciates in value during periods of risk aversion in financial markets.

As expected, manufacturing exports have a positive and significant effect on manufacturing employment, whereas outward direct investment has a negative and significant effect. Chinese exports show a positive sign, suggesting that the positive effects of Chinese economic development on Japanese manufacturing dominated the negative competition effect. Finally, the empirical realisations of the goodness-of-fit criteria, among them the very high R-Squared, indicate the appropriateness of our selected empirical model. While all other variables are industry-specific, INDINPUTPRICE and INPUSA are non-industry-specific variables. In this sense, we follow a mixed panel-time series modelling approach after having estimated sector-specific ARDL models. Figure 7 shows industrial production (INP) and industry-specific real effective exchange rates (REER) for selected industries.

In our annual data analysis, the DOLS and ARDL estimations provide robust results which indicate that appreciations of the real effective yen exchange rate did have significant negative effects on the share of manufacturing in total employment in Japan. This is despite the fact that the yen also experienced longer periods of real effective depreciation, which is indicative of hysteresis effects on manufacturing. Our findings are consistent with recent research on the hollowing out of the U.S. economy, where findings by Campbell (2017) also point at the presence of hysteresis effects. But we should also highlight that the magnitude of the exchange rate effects in our annual data analysis are much smaller than of those variables that have the biggest effect on manufacturing employment, namely TFP and fixed capital formation. Furthermore, Pooled EGLS finds significant negative effect also for the transport equipment sector.

  1. As a robustness check, we also conducted Dickey-Fuller GLS tests, Phillips-Perron tests, Kwiatkowski-Phillips-Schmidt-Shin (KPSS) and Ng-Perron unit root tests not only for the yen exchange rate but also for all other variables.
  2. Due to its relatively low interest rates, the Japanese Yen is often used in carry trades with the Australian Dollar and the US Dollar.
  3. If at all, the significance of, for instance, the yen exchange rate, even slightly increases once again in the specification excluding Chinese exports.
  4. The new 10,000 yen note is to feature Eiichi Shibusawa, a Japanese industrialist in the 19th and early 20th centuries known as the “father of Japanese capitalism.” The 5,000 yen note will feature Umeko Tsuda, who founded Tsuda University in Tokyo, pioneering women’s education.
  5. Kato (2018) examines the effects of exchange rate changes and productivity on manufacturing exports for the period 2002–2012 and finds exchange rates to be important factors to affect firm-level exports.

Some of the best places to buy Japanese yen are at a large branch of a national bank such as Chase, Bank of America, or Wells Fargo. You can also buy foreign currency including JPY at airports, although exchange outlets there are likely to feature wider buy/sell spreads as the price of the convenient location. The Japanese yen is the third-most traded currency in the foreign exchange market after the U.S. dollar (USD) and the euro.

Japan’s Economic Growth and the Role of Government

This leads us to employ (only) the first differences of the variables of our empirical model. This comes at the cost that we are not able to exploit level information (as it is the case in our cointegration exercise). The ARDL model selection process employed by us uses the same sample for each estimation and selects the final model by maximising the empirical realisation of information criteria (in our case, of the Akaike criterion).

There is no substantial change of the estimation results, with respect to the magnitude and the sign of the estimated coefficients. If at all, the significance of, for instance, the yen exchange rate, even slightly increases once again in the specification excluding Chinese exports. Moreover, we also enacted DOLS regression with Newey-West correction of the coefficient covariance matrix (Newey and West 1987). Again, the estimation results do not change much with respect to both the magnitude and the sign of the estimated coefficients.

The weighted value of exports to the trading partner is calculated based on
the average export share of each trading partner among the 30 countries and
regions selected above during the current calendar year. The data source is the
Trade Statistics released by the Ministry of Finance (Individual shares in are shown in Table 1). Our robustness checks reveal that the total goodness-of-fit does not pips trading become significantly lower if EXPCHIN is eliminated from our empirical model. This does not come as a surprise since both variables represent indicators of the world business cycle, i.e., the so-called “global factor”. For exactly this reason, we leave out EXPCHIN in our next DOLS-specification. Once you know that information, multiply the amount you have in USD by the current exchange rate.

USD/EUR

In mid-2022, however, the JPY slumped to a 24-year low against the U.S. dollar as the BoJ kept its policy rate near zero while the Federal Reserve raised the federal funds rate to fight high inflation. Rising consumer prices aggravated by the yen’s decline had become a political issue in Japan ahead of national elections. Some Japanese yen banknote denominations are scheduled for a redesign by 2024. The new 1,000 yen note will honor the medical scientist Shibasaburo Kitasato.

data become available, the preliminary estimates are finalized. The effective exchange rate is an indicator to grasp Japan’s international
competitiveness in terms of its foreign exchange rates that cannot be understood
by examining only individual exchange rates between the yen and other
currencies.

USD – US Dollar

In all cases, the sectoral yen exchange rate enters the final model consistently with a lag of three months (time-to-build effect). What is more, the selected empirical models are rather parsimonious in terms of the number of variables included. The (changes in the) Japanese industrial input price (INDINPUTPRICE) https://bigbostrade.com/ and US industrial production (INPUSA) are not part of the finally selected model. However, the lagged endogenous variable (change in Japanese industrial production) turns out to be highly significant throughout. However, this type of evidence is quite typical of regressions of changes on changes.

The two series tend to move in opposite direction, indicating that real effective exchange rates may indeed have a negative impact on industrial production. We also find significant negative effects of the real effective yen exchange rate on industrial output when using monthly and industry-specific data. Our ARDL estimations find significant negative effects for chemicals, electrical equipment, transport equipment, rubber, optical instruments and paper. Our panel analysis with sector-specific monthly data suggests that movements of the sector-specific real effective yen exchange rate had significant impact on up to seven industrial sectors (chemicals, optical instruments, rubber, wood, textiles, paper and transport equipment).

These coins imitated Chinese coins, and when Japan was no longer able produce their own coins, Chinese currency was imported into the country. Over the next few centuries, the inflow of Chinese coins did not meet the demand, so to counter this issue, two privately minted Japanese coins, the Toraisen and Shichusen, entered circulation from the 14th to 16th century. Around the 15th century, the minting of gold and silver coins known as Koshu Kin was encouraged and gold coinage was soon made into the new standard currency. The government later established a unified monetary system that consisted of gold currency, as well as silver and copper coins.

In contrast, yen ETFs offer no leverage, investing in yen-backed assets such as short-term debt and bonds. Though holding yen ETFs does expose one to potentially damaging currency risk. Coins worth 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 yen are in circulation alongside ¥1,000, ¥2,000, ¥5,000, and ¥10,000 banknotes.

  1. There can be therefore no general recommendations regarding the most appropriate exchange rate regime.
  2. Having investigated the long-term impact of real effective exchange movements on aggregate manufacturing employment with annual data spanning almost five decades, we now turn to an analysis using higher frequency and, importantly, sector specific data.
  3. International competitiveness is affected not only by the exchange rate but
also by domestic and foreign price movements.
  4. Yet our results suggest that a strong yen had more than just transitory effects on Japanese manufacturing employment and output.

More specifically, the DOLS procedure controls for endogeneity of all explanatory variables by inserting leads and lags of the changes of all exogenous variables. Hence, DOLS is a powerful estimation technique, where standard errors are corrected for heteroscedasticity and cross-section correlation (Saikkonen 1992; Stock and Watson 1993). By inserting the leads and lags of the exogenous variables in first differences, the explanatory variables in levels become (super-) exogenous and the regression results unbiased (Wooldridge 2009). Where ej,t,m is the nominal exchange rate of the yen in terms of
foreign currency j at month m of year t, and wj,t is the weight of
exports to country (or region) j in year t. For example, the effective exchange rates from January to December in are preliminarily released and then revised accordingly.

The weighted average
(geometric mean) of the yen’s exchange rates against other major currencies is
calculated using the annual value of Japan’s trade with the respective countries
and regions as its weights. As a robustness check, we estimated sector-specific ARDL models, this time including Japanese exports. The pattern of the results does change in the sense that only for chemicals, electrical equipment, rubber, paper and food there is still a significant impact of the sector-specific yen exchange rate with the “correct” sign. The selection of explanatory variables in (1) is motivated by the standard variables used in previous studies on de-industrialisation. To these we add EXR as the variable of our particular interest to investigate the hypothesis that movements of the yen’s real effective exchange rate have contributed to a de-industrialisation of the Japanese economy. With the release of the newest figures of the effective exchange rate, the
current year’s weighted value of exports is not available.

Trading Japanese Yen

Calculating a conversion of U.S. dollars to Japanese yen is fairly simple. The 1985 Plaza Accord agreement led to the managed depreciation https://bigbostrade.com/ of the U.S. dollar that more than doubled the value of the Japanese yen against the dollar by 1988, from ¥239 to ¥123 per $1.

After a period of steady devaluation against the Canadian and U.S. dollars, Japan followed the U.S. and Canada by adopting the gold standard in 1897. The yen is also a distant third behind the U.S. dollar and the euro as the denomination of official foreign exchange reserves, with the reserves held in dollars exceeding those in yen more than 10-fold as of Q4 2021. By the 19th century, Spanish Dollars were being used in Japan, along with local currencies. In order to simplify and centralize the different coins being used at the time, the Yen (which means ‘circle’ or ’round object’) was created in 1871.

Given the importance of the manufacturing sector for growth, development and employment, policy makers ought to consider potential adverse effects of rapid, large-scale exchange rate appreciations. As pointed out by Frankel (1999), no single exchange rate regime is right for all countries or at all times. There can be therefore no general recommendations regarding the most appropriate exchange rate regime. But our findings suggest that the exchange rate is too important to be ignored by policy makers. In this article we have investigated the role of the yen exchange rate in the de-industrialisation that has taken place in Japan over recent decades. There are certainly multiple factors that have played a role in this process, and we do not seek to evoke the impression that the exchange rate has been the single most important factor.

This is despite the fact that the yen also experiences longer periods of real effective depreciation and is thus indicative of hysteresis effects (Krugman and Baldwin 1987; Belke et al. 2013). Our DOLS estimations also find a negative and significant effect of outward FDI. Price indices for domestically produced trading goods are ideal in deflating
the nominal exchange rates to calculate the real effective exchange rates,
because relative prices of trading goods between Japan and its trading partners
determine the competitiveness of Japan’s exports. In principle, the producer
price indices (PPI), or the wholesale price indices (WPI) for domestic products
either for domestic demand, or for domestic demand and exports, are used to
calculate the real effective exchange rate (for Japan, Domestic Corporate Goods
Price Index is used). However, several countries where these kinds of price
indices are not included in the International Financial Statistics (released by
IMF), other indices such as consumer price indices (CPI) are used instead. The
sum of export shares to the countries and regions where PPI or WPI is used
amounts to 94 percent in CY 2005.

The Japanese count sums in multiples of 10,000 yen rather than 1,000 as in the West with U.S. dollars or euros. Create a chart for any currency pair in the world to see their currency history. These currency charts use live mid-market rates, are easy to use, and are very reliable.

Low domestic interest rates in Japan amid deflation have encouraged the country’s financial institutions and households to seek out higher yields overseas, a tendency known as the carry trade. When such investment flows reverse in times of market stress, the yen has tended to gain on the U.S. dollar. World War II destroyed the value of the yen, and U.S. occupation authorities after the war imposed a complex web of regulated exchange rates while steadily depreciating the yen against the dollar amid rapid inflation. The yen’s value was pegged to the dollar in 1949 but allowed to float in 1973 following the collapse of the Bretton Woods system of fixed currency exchange rates. Non-zero covariances are allowed across cross-sections (degree-of-freedom corrected).

JPY – Japanese Yen

The yen figured in trades accounting for 16.8% of foreign currency trading turnover in a 2019 survey, compared with more than 88.3% for the dollar and 32.3% for the euro. As mentioned above, productivity increases have been identified in the de-industrialisation literature as a major factor behind the fall in manufacturing employment, so we would expect a negative coefficient. We considered using alternative measures of productivity, such as multifactor productivity, but were not able to obtain data ranging back to the 1970s. A string of studies examines the role of Japanese outward direct investment in the hollowing out process. Japanese outward direct investment took off in the mid-1980s (Fukao et al. 2003). The number of Japanese multinationals increased by 290% between 1985 and 1992, while overseas production of Japanese firms increased from 3% in 1982 to 17% in 2002 (Ryan and Toubal 2017).

Moreover, the R-squared in our estimations appears to be located in the upper possible range. Table 2 displays the results of a DOLS estimation of our fully specified empirical model (Eq. (1)). The share of manufacturing which best describes the difference between preferred and common stocks in total number of employed persons (EMPMAN) represents the dependent variable. The estimated coefficient of the yen exchange rate (marked in bold) is negative as expected from theory and highly significant.

Yet our results suggest that a strong yen had more than just transitory effects on Japanese manufacturing employment and output. Hence, we proceed with the yen exchange rate considering it as an I(1) variable. It does not
indicate the absolute level of competitiveness of any country or region
including Japan. As robustness checks we also conducted DOLS regressions with White correction of the coefficient covariance matrix (White 1980).

The wide array of unit root tests we conducted, including the ordinary Augmented-Dickey-Fuller test, the Dickey-Fuller GLS (ERS) test, the Phillips-Perron test, the Kwiatowski-Phillips-Schmidt-Shin test and the Ng-Perron unit root test, suggest an I(1) process for each of the variables. Hence, we proceed with the individual variables considering them as I(1) variables which have to be differenced once in order to become stationary. Our currency rankings show that the most popular US Dollar exchange rate is the USD to USD rate. Currency traders have been betting the Bank of Japan will keep its policy rate near zero despite rising inflation. The BoJ had acquired more than half of Japan’s government bonds outstanding by June 2022 in an effort to cap long-term interest rates in order to promote growth.
